Online casino wagering requirements explained with a 35x bonus multiplier and casino chips

Wagering Requirements Explained: What That “35x” Really Means

Posted on October 22, 2026October 22, 2026 By Casino Today Guide No Comments on Wagering Requirements Explained: What That “35x” Really Means

You’ve seen the banner: “100% welcome bonus up to $500 + 100 free spins!” Sounds amazing. Then you scroll down to the fine print and find three words that change everything: wagering requirements apply.

Most people skip that part, and that’s exactly where bonuses go wrong. Let’s break it down in plain English, with real numbers, so you know what you’re signing up for before you hit “Claim.”

Online casino wagering

What are wagering requirements?

A wagering requirement (you’ll also see it called play through or rollover) is how many times you have to bet your bonus before you can withdraw the winnings that came from it.

It’s written as a multiplier: 20x, 35x, 40x. The casino isn’t handing you free money, it wants you to play. The multiplier is how much play they expect before the bonus becomes yours.

A simple example

Say you deposit $100 and get a 100% match bonus, so your balance is now $200. The wagering requirement is 35x.

The big question is: 35x what?

  • 35x the bonus only: 35 × $100 = $3,500 in total bets.
  • 35x deposit + bonus: 35 × $200 = $7,000 in total bets.

Same “35x,” but the second version is twice the work. The terms always say which one applies, so check before you claim.

And don’t panic about the numbers: you’re not spending $3,500 of your own money. Wagering counts the total amount bet, and the same balance gets spun again and again. Bet $1 a spin, 3,500 times, and you’ve wagered $3,500 even though you only started with $200.

So is the bonus actually worth it?

Here’s where RTP comes in. RTP (return to player) is the share of money a game pays back over the long run. If it’s new to you, we explain it here: What Does RTP Mean in Online Casinos?.

Let’s say you play a slot with 96% RTP. On average, the casino keeps 4% of everything wagered. Over $3,500 of wagering, that’s roughly:

$3,500 × 4% = $140

So on average you’d lose about $140 while clearing a $100 bonus. That doesn’t mean you can’t win. Slots are random, and plenty of players clear bonuses and cash out. But it shows why a high multiplier can quietly turn a “free” bonus into a bad deal.

A rough guide:

  • Under 20x: very friendly
  • 20x–35x: pretty standard
  • 40x and up: think twice, especially if it applies to deposit + bonus

Not every game counts the same

This one catches beginners all the time. Games contribute differently to your requirement:

  • Slots: usually 100%
  • Table games (blackjack, roulette, baccarat): often 10% or less, sometimes 0%
  • Live dealer games: frequently 0–10%

If blackjack counts for 10%, a $100 bet only moves your requirement by $10. You’d need ten times as many bets. Some casinos also ban certain slots during a bonus, so read the list of excluded games.

Other rules hiding in the fine print

Wagering requirements rarely travel alone. Look out for:

Maximum bet. Many casinos cap your bet per spin while a bonus is active, often around $5. Go over it, even by accident, and they can cancel your winnings.

Time limit. Seven days? Three? It’s a lot of wagering to squeeze into a short window.

Maximum cashout. Some bonuses, especially no-deposit ones, limit how much you can withdraw, no matter how much you win.

Sticky vs. non-sticky. With a “sticky” bonus, the bonus money itself can never be withdrawn, only the winnings. With a “non-sticky” one, your own cash is used first, so if you win big early, you can walk away. Non-sticky is generally better for you.

What about free spins?

Free spins usually have their own wagering requirement, applied to whatever you win from them. Win $20 from your spins with a 40x requirement, and you need to wager $800 before cashing out. We cover the basics here: What Is a Free Spin in an Online Casino?.

A quick checklist before you claim

  1. Is the requirement on the bonus only, or on deposit + bonus?
  2. How many days do I have to finish it?
  3. What’s the max bet while the bonus is active?
  4. Do the games I like count 100%?
  5. Is there a cap on how much I can cash out?

If you can’t find clear answers in a minute or two, that’s a red flag on its own. A trustworthy casino makes its rules easy to find and easy to understand.

It’s perfectly fine to skip the bonus

Here’s something casinos won’t advertise: you don’t have to take it. Most sites let you decline the bonus or opt out before you deposit. If you just want to play for fun on a small budget, going without a bonus means no wagering, no max-bet rules and no deadlines. Whatever you win is simply yours.

A bonus makes sense when the terms are reasonable and you were planning to play that much anyway. It doesn’t make sense if you’d have to stretch your budget just to clear it.

The bottom line

Wagering requirements aren’t a trick, but they are the price of the bonus. Once you know how to read them, “35x” stops being scary and becomes just another number to compare, like a price tag.

Whatever you choose, treat casino play as entertainment, not a way to make money. Set a budget before you start, only play with money you can afford to lose, and take regular breaks. Make sure online gambling is legal where you live and that you meet the minimum age. If it stops being fun, reach out to a local support service.

One last tip

Next time you see a shiny bonus, give yourself 60 seconds before you claim it. Open the terms, find the wagering requirements, and do the quick math: multiply the bonus by the number, then check which games count and how long you have. If the numbers still look fair, go for it. If they don’t, you’ve just saved yourself a headache, and probably a chunk of your balance. The best bonus isn’t the biggest one on the banner, it’s the one you actually understand.
